New York State Celebrates Juneteenth As An Official Public Holiday

Juneteenth: A Day of Celebration and Remembrance

New York State Celebrates Juneteenth as an Official Public Holiday

Governor Kathy Hochul has issued a proclamation in observance of Juneteenth, the day commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth will now be an official public holiday in New York State.

Juneteenth, observed on June 19, marks the date in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas finally received news of their emancipation, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The holiday has been observed in various forms for over 150 years, and in recent years, there has been a growing movement to make it a national holiday.

New York City's Juneteenth Celebration

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced that Juneteenth will be a paid holiday for city employees. The city will also host a series of events to commemorate the holiday, including a flag-raising ceremony, a virtual concert, and a community cookout.

New York State's Second Juneteenth Celebration

This year will mark the second time that New York State will celebrate Juneteenth as an official public holiday. The state first recognized the holiday in 2020, in response to the Black Lives Matter protests that followed the murder of George Floyd.

The recognition of Juneteenth as a public holiday is a significant step towards acknowledging the history of slavery in the United States and its lasting impact on Black communities. It is also a day to celebrate the resilience and strength of the Black community and to recommit to the fight for racial justice.
