George W Bush

43rd President George Walker Bush

Life and Career

George Walker Bush, born on July 6, 1946, is an American politician and businessman who served as the 43rd President of the United States from 2001 to 2009. Bush, a member of the Republican Party, is the son of former President George H. W. Bush and Barbara Bush. He was raised in Connecticut and Texas and graduated from Yale University and Harvard Business School.

Bush began his political career in the 1970s, serving as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas from 1979 to 1995. He was elected Governor of Texas in 1994 and served two terms in that office. Bush ran for president in 2000 and won a close election against Democratic candidate Al Gore.

Presidency

Bush's presidency was largely defined by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. In response to the attacks, Bush launched the War on Terror, which included the invasion of Afghanistan and the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. Bush also enacted the Patriot Act, which expanded the government's surveillance powers.

In 2003, Bush led the United States into the Iraq War. The war, which was intended to overthrow the regime of Saddam Hussein, was highly controversial and lasted for nearly nine years. Bush left office in 2009 with low approval ratings, but his legacy is still debated today.
